Dorothy Cotton Youth Singers

To preserve and disseminate the Negro Spiritual as a unique American art form that laid the foundation for later forms such as the Blues, Gospel, and more.

To provide local youth with an environment to learn healthy singing techniques and musicianship using music from the African American tradition.

To bring social justice to Ithaca and the world through music.

To empower and uplift young people and inspire them to celebrate African American music, carry on the legacy of the spiritual, and use their voices to work for social justice.

To honor Dorothy Cotton’s legacy by continuing her work through music.

To teach youth about past historical movements in which people used singing to fight for their rights.
